Choosing Your Pattern Repeat

Choosing the repeat of your pattern can be crucial part of designing your own fabric, but sometimes it can be difficult to know where to start. To help you we've included on this page a canvas representing a full 150cm width of fabric, and thus your final print. As you increase or decrease the size of the repeat the canvas will adjust with it, giving you an approximate preview of how you can expect the fabric to look.

We generally recommend starting from 20-30cm and slowly working your way either larger or smaller.

Ultimately this is a matter of personal taste, and there's no universally right or wrong size. The best advice we can offer is to look at the example canvas and try to imagine where you would cut the fabric if you had it in front of you.

Please note that we advise caution with repeats larger than 50 cms. Depending on the design it may compromise the quality and 'crispness' of the final print. Always feel free to check in with us if you have any doubts.

Choosing Your Base Fabric

Choosing the right base is an important part of designing your own fabric, as the sublimation process allows the fabric to retain its original texture, handle and drape after printing.

As well as this, you'll probably find that colours show a little differently on different base fabrics. All of our samples use the same stock design, however, so it's a good idea to request samples of a few different base fabrics to give you some idea of what to expect. As with most of our fabrics, your first 6 samples are free (excluding postage costs).

To help you make the right choice, we've listed some of the defining characteristics of each of our base fabrics. Samples are also readily available and will allow you to see first-hand how designs can be expected to print on any given fabric.

A premium Anti-Pill polar fleece composed of specially treated spun polyester yarns to deliver a fabric that’s extremely durable as well as being beautifully soft.

This medium weight canvas is constructed of a tightly woven plain polyester weave. Pliable yet strong, no matter the end use this hard wearing canvas is the perfect choice.

A short pile upholstery velour with a luxuriously soft handle and excellent drape. Ideal for multiple projects from curtains to upholstery.

A premium furnishing velvet with a matte finish. Add a touch of elegance to your home with our luxurious and durable Boutique Velvet.

A lustrous velvet where the pile is crushed to create a surface that shimmers, whilst simultaneously offering a uniquely soft handle. Once printed, this fabric offers vibrant glistening tones, a brilliant choice for those wanting something that stands out.

This satin is heavier, subtler, and more durable than regular satin, this Duchess satin serves as an exquisite and versatile dressmaking fabric.

This 100% polyester imitation faux suede is vegan friendly and has a brushed texture to mimic to look and feel of leather suede. Suitable for many applications from dressmaking to upholstery.

A lightweight two way stretch fabric with a soft handle. Suitable for clothing and baby care.

A medium weight optic-white fabric that mimics the look and feel of real linen. Specially treated to deliver a clean feel, the fabric is woven to create a natural slub variation, mirroring the classic textured appearance of linen.

This extremely soft polar fleece is composed of 100% recycled polyester yarn. A sustainable option for the eco-conscious.

Wherever possible multiple quantities are cut as a single continuous length. With some exceptions there is a minimum order quantity of 1 full metre.
